About the Role:
We are seeking an experienced Environmental Health Officer (EHO) / Environmental Health Practitioner (EHP) to join the Public Protection team in Kendal.
This is a professional role where you will act as a lead officer, providing legal and technical advice to the Council, businesses, residents, and visitors on environmental protection matters.
The role involves a split caseload of:
Planning & Licensing Consultations (60%)
Environmental Protection work (40%), including noise complaints, nuisance issues, drainage, and pests
You will be responsible for carrying out inspections, investigations, and enforcement activity to ensure compliance with relevant legislation and Council policies. The role requires strong experience managing statutory deadlines, particularly for planning and licensing responses.
Duties Include:
Responding to Planning & Licensing consultations within statutory deadlines
Investigating environmental protection complaints including noise, nuisance, drainage, and pest issues
Carrying out inspections and interventions to ensure legislative compliance
Providing professional advice to stakeholders including residents, businesses, and internal teams
Leading or supporting enforcement action where required
Managing and prioritising a varied caseload effectively
Reporting to the Line Manager on a day-to-day basis
Key Responsibilities Include:
Comprehensive Assessment: Conduct detailed investigations into environmental complaints
Compliance & Enforcement: Ensure adherence to environmental health legislation and take action where necessary
Safeguarding Public Health: Protect the wellbeing of the community through effective environmental control
Advisory Role: Provide expert guidance on environmental protection matters
Collaborative Working: Work alongside planning, licensing, and regulatory teams
Documentation: Maintain accurate records and reports in line with statutory requirements
Who We Are Looking For:
Education: Degree or equivalent qualification in Environmental Health
Experience: Strong experience in Environmental Protection and statutory nuisance work
Specialist Requirement (Non-negotiable):
Proven experience responding to Planning & Licensing consultations
Demonstrable ability to manage a caseload involving nuisance, drainage, pests, and environmental complaints
Skills:
Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
Strong investigative and analytical ability
Ability to work independently and manage competing priorities
Sound knowledge of environmental health legislation
Additional Requirements:
Car driver required
Able to cover the South Lakeland geographical area
Comfortable working in a hybrid / mixed working environment
