The NHS is facing a significant shift in its staffing practices, with the government putting an end to off-framework staffing from this month. But what do the changes mean for you as agency workers and how can you prepare for the change to make sure you stay in work?

What’s changing?

Off-framework staffing is where NHS trusts hire agency workers outside the approved frameworks that ensure temporary staffing arrangements meet certain standards, including fair pricing and regulatory compliance. Many trusts use off-framework agencies to provide a quicker, but more expensive, solution to ongoing staffing shortages.

The change aims to limit excessive spending and ensure all temporary staff are recruited under fair and transparent conditions.

A double edged sword

For agency workers, however, the end of off-framework staffing could be a double-edged sword. On one hand, it will bring more stability and standardisation. Framework-approved agencies follow strict rules to ensure fair pay, proper training and adherence to working hour limits.

On the other, off-framework agencies have historically offered higher pay rates to attract workers willing to fill urgent vacancies. With these practices ending, some agency nurses, doctors and allied health professionals may see a drop in earnings compared to the premium rates they’ve gotten used to.

How can agency workers prepare for the transition?

While the end of off-framework staffing marks a significant change for NHS agency workers, signing up with an experienced on-framework agency now will help make sure you stay in work. Agency workers can prepare for this transition by registering with framework-approved agencies, such as HCRG Staffing (formerly HCRG Doctors). And, if you’re already registered with us, you don’t need to do anything at all: speak to your recruitment consultant to let them know you’re open for your next role.

Stay in work the easy way by registering with an on-framework provider

We’ve been completely on-framework for many years and our concierge onboarding service can help walk you through the process and find the right job for you quickly and seamlessly.

While on-framework hourly pay rates may not be as high (and are the same for all agencies), registering with us can increase your earning potential. We supply staff into every NHS trust in England and so we can offer you more roles than any other agency thanks to our agreements with employers across the country.

Our dedicated divisions place talented people across nursing, consulting, allied health professions, mental health, health science and administrative roles.

You can find out more about becoming a candidate with HCRG Staffing or, if you’re already with us – you can still earn up to £500 by referring someone who isn’t.
